Are there any good jobs out there?
Traditionally, salaries in the hospitality sector have been rather lack-lustre. Whilst this has never been a stumbling block to entering the sector, the substantial increase overall in hospitality salaries over recent years now makes it a highly viable career option for youngsters searching for great job options with equally grand salaries. Job progression is easily found in the hospitality industry – staff leave, they move on, and doors open for new job opportunities and job growth every day. Graduates with recognised qualifications and solid practical experience can walk into jobs these days with starting salaries of around R20 000 per month, depending on where they are placed. You must concede – it’s a great starting point.
Good salary, good progression, but what’s really available?
There are so many jobs to choose from – it’s such a very diverse industry with so many different sectors to consider such as:
- Hotels, resorts and Game lodges
- Restaurants and all other types of foodservice operations
- Cruise ships, airlines and luxury passenger rail
- Theme parks and casinos
- Meetings, events and incentives
- Recreation and sports management
- Local tourist destinations and attractions
Our graduates at the International Hotel School are able to start their careers in Supervisory or Junior Management positions. This includes job opportunities as Assistant Managers or Supervisors in all sectors of the hospitality and culinary fields such as Front Office, Housekeeping, Revenue Management, Finance, HR, Sales and Marketing, Operations, Food & Beverage, Kitchen or General Management. In fact, we have a full list of opportunities you can read through here. And consider too that whilst these jobs may sound very familiar to you, what if you were experiencing them in Paris, or on a cruise liner, or locally in a five star game lodge. It makes each position unique, exciting and challenging.
Looking for something different?
We love young people who love to take their skills and talents and use them in unique and interesting ways. Hospitality graduates often become quite entrepreneurial and begin running their own businesses such as Vaughn’s Cupcakery (aka Cupboom Vaughn’s Cupcakery) and Parker Event Management in Dubai (these are just a couple of businesses which our Alumni have started). Others run night clubs, golfing or sporting clubs / country clubs; catering companies, restaurants, cleaning companies and more.
Our chef graduates are also exploring new opportunities as Chocolatiers, Recipe Developers, Food Stylists, Confectioners, Patissiers, Bakers, Researchers, as well as Kitchen Managers, to name but a few.
So, it’s easy to get ahead and choose a hospitality career that suits you when you put these 4 things together:
- Talent and drive
- A great qualification that is recognised locally and abroad
- Plenty of work experience (which an IHS qualification guarantees)
